A master and his student

Post by Valkenhayn R. Hellsing on Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:42 pm

Area 28. A place not many people of Kagutsuchi know about. It is the home of a creature, driven by madness and the ever hunger for wisdom. Not a soul would wander around these dark spots without a good reason or two. Is it really safe to be here?

Valkenhayn was waiting. He stood in the middle of a dim light coming far from the surface. A crack in the roof marked the only spot that wasn't devoured by darkness. The old man was silently watching his clock, waiting for the arrival of a special fellow.

----------------(From home)------------->
After a while of running routine verifications in Lost Town [for both his work as a NOL agent and himself], Reiei had found a very particular scent. One he remembered far too well: the smell of his master. While it was difficult to track Valkenhayn for the untrained Reiei's nose, it was possible. Which meant Valkenhayn knew exactly how careful he needed to be for Reiei to find him and for the NOL not to.
After a little while of difficulty, Reiei found out where his master was: Area 28. Not many people stepped here, especially because of the seithr presence and the creature that roamed around here. Reiei was accustomed to both seithr and fighting. Well, at least enough to fend anything off.

Once done with the travelling, Reiei stepped in front of his idol, and greeted his elder in a deep bow. "I am glad you found the time to care for me, Sir."
Since he had separated from Valkenhayn at the front door, Reiei actually desired to complete his training. His whole trembled in excitement in unleashing his potential... but he had to calm those pulsions, and listen carefully.

"My, my, Reiei... you have to mind your punctuality!"
Valkenhayn encountered the young lad with a tutoring tone in his voice as he still looked down onto his watch. Silently he closes it, letting it's clicking noise echo through the dark. After putting it away he finally faced Reiei, but his expression was warm and welcoming.
"Two minutes too early then I anticipated!"
The old man smiled at the youngster while he put his hands behind his back. There was no tension in his gestures or stance, yet it had something straight and noble to it.
"Gentlemen need to be on the minute, though, mind you!"
He saw the excitement of his opposite as he only stood there in silent again. His mannerism knew no limits.
"There may be something outrageous happening as we speak and act. But now is not the time for us to meddle in the acts of others now! I hope you are prepared for what is about to come at you. I chose this spot wisely as there is little to no light... night vision is something entirely else than dark vision. Also the compareable high amount of seithr will cause your senses to be jammed for a bit."
"Now, I want you to come at me without resorting to the power of your inner beast! Moonlight gives us strength, but in a place such as this, there will be no benefit of it!"

Slowly the butler started to move one foot back getting into a lower stance, letting his right arm reach out, his hand just slightly on height of his vision. So Reiei just had to charge directly? Valkenhayn sure didn't use any tricks like laying traps of some sort. That wouldn't be the way of a gentleman... right?

Hearing Valkenhayn's first sentence, Reiei thought he'd been late. His senses didn't get enough activity and were already rusting? No, the hero of all werewolves welcomed Reiei with open arms (if only figuratively); and he was early. Still a bit too imprecise though.

Afterwards, Valkenhayn explained everything of this training: total isolation from the world until it was over... and it was going to be hard. The nigh-absence of light rendered things hardly visible. Reiei was used to dull and lowly-lighted places, but this place was darker than his home during the deepest nights. And the seithr was even thicker than what Reiei had experienced so far. But he understood. No words on this one: Reiei just nodded to show he got what the training would be.

So first, no werewolf power, just his bare physical potential... though he was pretty fit compared to the average man, his potential was often left unexploited. But that was out of the question; the training had to begin. Reiei decided it was time to get started. What if he could use no fancy tricks? Holding back was something he was far too good at doing.

The young blonde took his steps as he rushed, low to the ground. His first move would be one of the tricks he modeled for himself after ones of another hero (the White Knight Hakumen), starting with a low kick to try and throw Valkenhayn off-balance (anyway it would obviously not, and Reiei was aware of that) and following it up with a straight kick that could push back its target far enough for Reiei to be able to react by the time he was back into a proper stance (or so he hoped, he was not accustomed to fighting persons as fast and strong as Valkenhayn).

"I see you have the right attitude... but such a straight forward move-"
Valkenhayn stepped forward, right into Reieis first attack, was he insane? Even if he was one of the six heroes, direct hits were something nobody was eager to take head on. What was so special on those legendary people? They were all more or less human, just like everybody else. They can bleed, they can get injured, they have feelings, they have sweat, tears, skin and flesh. Superhuman? Even they were destined to die some day...

Hakumen's special SusanoO Unit was something that would fend of most of the common attacks, yet Valkenhayn didn't have such a thing. Taking that hit head on would at least leave a bruise on his leg.

Howling Moon

... no. The entity known as Valkenhayn was not famous for his special armor or blade nor the knowledge of magic. He was a beast, swift and strong. Stepping into that attack had the consequence of ruining Reieis timing and impact as the kick couldn't reach it's full potential. It was like kicking a stonewall, the stance of the butler was like iron! When the hit landed , Valkenhayn then reached out his arm to grab the connected foot of his opponent only to throw him violently through the void battleground.
"- will never work against a superior enemy!"
Letting go Valkenhayn sent Reiei flying through the air. Luckily the place was empty and wide, so there shouldn't be a wall he would be hitting on his way...

Re: A master and his student

Reiei's first supposed-to-be attacks were somehow easily deflected and countered by his elder, getting him thrown into the air, almost pitifully. In a look or two at his back, the young werewolf adjusted his feet so he could land safely. After all, even without activity, Reiei had been trained to fight (if only a bit) as a NOL member.
So true, Sir... Straight attacks will never work. The disciple tried to find a way in his mind to do his usual feint tactics even without using either Armagus nor his true untapped physical power. He would do ridiculous performance, but he had to try if he wanted one day to perform such feats as fighting without using much of his power.
Fine... No leap ever or I end up like that, no straight up attack or I get thrown again..., he thought as he flexed his ankle a bit, in case Valkenhayn had somehow twisted it. But no, it was fine. One second after landing, Reiei was on the offensive again, but a more thought had been put into it. He had to be hard to catch, else he would spend the whole day being tossed around, and that would be a huge waste of time.
Reiei advanced again, running and seemingly going for a front kick with his left foot, but he was ready.
Valkenhayn could step in the attack and push Reiei back, in which case Reiei had his right foot ready for a little backstep that would allow him to resume attacking right away. Or maybe he would try to grab the attacking leg again, and in that case, Reiei would break his balance for a step at the side...

"Again? Did you not learn anything from your last try?"
Valkenhayn seemed disappointed. Considering Reiei's movements it looked like it would end in the same way again as moments ago. The old butler readied himself, this time his other leg was in front to take the attack.... but the young wolfman had learned from the last encounter so avoiding Valkenhayn's similar approach was not that hard.
"Hm."
With a short sound of his voice he looked impressed, yet ready to take whatever was flying at him. He sure had a disadventage for the time being as he seemed wide open and out of the balance!

Since Valkenhayn did ready himself to take such an attack, Reiei changed his attack at the moment it would meet Valkenhayn. Even if the kick connected, that was exactly what was suspected. If he was to actually do something Reiei would have to strike where it was unexpected. This front kick was a pretext for being actually a wider step that would bring Reiei nearly at point-blank from Valkenhayn, able to try and sweep the butler's legs with his other leg. If he was apparently off balance, Reiei had to make him truly off balance. Even if he himself had trouble adjusting to his own confusion tactics in a dark place like this.
Though his actions were precise, he still asked himself what that training was for. What is the point in not using my inner power if that's what was to be developed? I don't know... His usual sharp thinking, which was nearly what defined him, was unusually loose and indeterminate... Was it only the fact that the training took all his attention?

A marvelous hit indeed. Valkenhayn was astonished as he underestimated his student. Just a moment ago it looked like the same outcome as the last encounter. The old butler was proud of his kinsman. The boy used his head, not only his muscles. At first Valkenhayn felt like rewarding the efforts of his student, but when Reiei's leg came swinging at his popliteal space, the old man decided otherwise. By making a jump into midair he dodged the legsweep-like move and by rotating his whole body, Valkenhayn sent his own leg into Reiei's direction. It was on par with the boy's head and would certainly hit it, if he wouldn't avoid it!

A bit jammed between his own tactics, the darkness being too present, and his thinking being somewhat hampered by the hardship, Reiei barely had barely taken the option of Valkenhayn dodging in mind.
What the...
The young werewolf barely had the time to set both his hands on the ground for a prompt backing maneuver that the older one's foot already had made contact with his head, forcing it against the ground before Reiei had the time to push himself back. Though he managed to gain some feet of space, he still was stunned. Disappoint. I thought I would do much better than that...
The blonde shook his head to regain some of his senses: his head did hit the ground hard, that was for sure. Apparently, his Armagus Hyakki had nothing, and his hat didn't have the slightest bit of a stain. But he was in the dark, unable to see if his outfit had been dirtied by the battle, which it obviously had. Gathering his focus back, Reiei took back some momentum, feinting that low spinning kick he did at the beginning, so he could follow up with a leaping heel drop that could probably hit the master's skull. Just like the one his master just did. Even if Reiei knew hitting an old person at the head was usually not polite at all (if not outright lowly), he knew Valkenhayn wasn't just some average person, and he had a fighter physique better preserved than Reiei's was developed; so those tactics were "justified". Besides, it would measure Reiei's assimilation ability.

So the young one was coming at his teacher again. Valkenhayn was happy seeing Reiei not dropping his motivation all so soon. The old man readied himself for the next encounter. Learning from the boy's first and second attack he would surely alter his movements in the middle of his next attempt. Therefore Valkenhayn was ready for almost everything... as Reiei guessed, the attack was nothing to startle the old butler as he blocked the incoming attack the same way as before only to dodge the aim for his head at the next moment with a swift move of his upper body.
"That was fast, Reiei."
With a short notice he complimented the young one. As a reward it seemed like they white-haired man wouldn't hit his student all too hard... with a palm-strike at the stomach he wanted to send Reiei flying again. Valkenhayn didn't use too much strength in his attack... he didn't want to Reiei to suffer from any severe damage as his inhuman strength sure would break a rip or two!

Re: A master and his student

Even though Reiei's attack was swift and still a good show of his abilities, it was all but easy to see coming for Valkenhayn. Once again, he was blocked by the sheer force of his master's stance; and he saw the palm coming at his stomach. That was not a good position for Reiei, though he reacted quickly by pushing his own palm forward to rival Valkenhayn's own attack. The result was most likely to be favoring the master since he largely outweighed Reiei, but since he was only counterattacking until now, there would not be problems such as getting attacked before regaining a proper stance.
As he was sent flying away by the power of their exchanged palm attacks, he fell to the ground, but rolled back to regain a stance quickly, trying to see if there was any movement on his master's part. With the seithr, everything Reiei saw during movement was kind of a blur; that made things really difficult for Reiei, because his usual eyesight allowed him to see perfectly in such situations.
Thinking about using Hyakki once, he shook his head in denial. No, the training includes fighting normally. No beast power, no gloves off, no Hyakki, nothing! To resist the temptation, he took the forehead collar off his head and hid it in a pocket of his vest. I must feel at my weakest to get the best out of what I have.
Not having yet found a way to attack without getting thrown off, Reiei thought about a way to pass Valkenhayn's strong guards... But that was hard to find, and for seconds he just stood a dozen feet away from his teacher, aiming to find how to do what he wished to strike safely.

After a while standing still, Valkenhayn moved.
"They say offense is the best defense. But you don't need to always make the first move! Let us commence with a real session. Show me how endurable you are!"
Saying so, the old butler charged in. He had long legs, yet his speed was moderate. Age seemed to get the better of the white haired man, but maybe he was still holding back.
When Valkenhayn started to throw his attacks at Reiei, it sure didn't seem to be the later one. His arms, legs, palms, fists.... he was swinging them at his student in an unresting pace from all kind of directions! Was it wise to counterattack? It was risky. But didn't Valkenhayn talk about a test of endurance? On the other hand: Where was the point only blocking and dodging incoming attacks?
The man with the pink hairtie aimed for Reiei's chest with a arm stab. Considering the beasty nature of this man resulting in inhuman strength, an ordinary person may find themselves pierced by such an attack!

Darn, now he's attacking..., Reiei thought as he blocked his elder's varied assault with increasing hardship. That part of the training is hard. As blocking that was enough for him to have some force spared for focusing, he saw the incoming arm stab attack.
His reactions flaring to life, he bent his body to the side, the attack grazing his ribs; and he tried to catch Valkenhayn's wrist to ensure his attacks: first an elbow strike to the chest, followed by a right kick, then a dashing hook punch he'd follow with a strange flipping heel kick he aimed to Valkenhayn's chin to send him straight up in the air.
After that, Reiei got a hand at his side. He had been hit: did the seithr take away so much from his sense of touch that he didn't even notice it until now?

The stab failed. Luckily so, as it may have meant a fatal injury. Reiei's counter also connected the way he wanted it to land. First he catched the arm, then he blowed in the elbow. The right kick was blocked, but the upper-cut hit as well and at last the heel kick. Some of the punches have been blocked somehow however... at least their full potential didn't seem to affect the old butler as they were intended to.
Commentless Valkenhayn yet charged in again, faster and fiercer as before! Wait... did Reiei just see a pair of claws glistening in the dim light?
"Dodge some of those!"
A growling voice adressed the young fellow to act careful. Wait, what was with the beast-taboo Valkenhayn mentioned at the beginning!?

Optimistic about some of his attacks actually hitting Valkenhayn, Reiei had let his guard down for a bit. Unable to even see the claws, the werewolf in training just took the scratches fully. He wasn't exactly trained for conditions that hard. The dark and the seithr were getting the better of him already?
No! Like in those tales I spent so much time reading... Even when the surroundings are against me... even if beings such as the Black Beast are against me... I don't have the right to give up. That would make me nothing but a stain on Madam Rachel's honor, and I definitely cannot allow that!
Surpassing the pain, Reiei stood up again. Despite still not taking his Armagus out of this pocket, not using beastly strength, nor anything but willpower, he stood up. The true training had yet to begin, but Reiei was not reluctant to throw himself in the fight any longer. Taking a stance, he showed Valkenhayn he was ready for what was coming next.

Blood-thirsty the growling beast stood there in a semi-human form. Valkenhayn did no longer look like an old gentleman, only his clothes indicated a noble origin. There was no respond to Reiei's demonstration of willpower as he rose from that last attack back up on his feet, showing his determination. A cold howling echoed through the depths of Area 28 as Valkenhayn transformed into a whole beast. Only a neat pink tie around his tail reminded of the tall butler. With a fierce attempt the wolf charged into Reiei's direction. His movement was more straight forward than any of his actions before. Valkenhayn still didn't say anything to the young fellow....
//Well done, Reiei-kun. Showing me your spirit lets me acknowledge your motivation to carry on... one day you will be a fine warrior!//
The lycanthrope was pleased.

Holy-... Reiei was being attacked by Valkenhayn... transformed into a wolf! If he was to fight that with only his human strength, it would drain out all of his energy soon... But he stood there only stepping back a bit, blocking the charge with both his arms. Being pushed away by such a strong charge, Reiei realized there was no use trying to find an opening after blocking attacks, because there was no opening to be found that way.
Taking a leap into the air, Reiei clenched his fist and descended with a punch he aimed at Valkenhayn's cranium. It would maybe get him some time to land and prepare his next move...

Indeed, being in his beasty form Valkenhayn was swift and brutally strong. Yet his methods to defend decreased drastically. There were only a few methods to block an attack in this form, no the main focus was to avoid getting hit. One could not wield a weapon, shield or armor properly in this form. One could not use his limbs for defense properly in this form. One could only use his fangs and claws to defend and even so it was more of an offensive action to ward off an enemy attack. That said Reiei really found his only adventage when facing his teacher in this beasty form. Compensating the sudden boost of physical parameters he had to counter with tricky maneuvers. Jumping right before the wolf came flying in and trying to hit its head was a smart move of Reiei... the attack landed certainly as the student felt the resistance against his fist, but obviously it wasn't enough to throw the beast out of balance. Valkenhayn stopped almost on spot after being hit to turn around swiftly and chase Reiei into midair. His claws and fangs charged into the direction of the almost immobile student aiming for his neck directly. How was he able to block the fierce attack? It looked like he had to at least sacrifice an arm in order to make it in time...

Even after that punch had hit its mark, that did nothing to deter the wolf he was facing; no, instead the wolf just went even more offensive, fangs and claws out for the young werewolf's neck. In such a situation, there was almost no way to make it to the ground without losing something. If I am to be of any use one day, I've got to lose the least on this one. Still refusing to tap into his inner power, still refusing also to use his Armagus, Reiei just did what was to do when fighting a beast: prevent the fangs from even touching him. He slapped the wolf's jaw closed with his right backhand so and gripped the right claw with his left hand. Though, Valkenhayn's left claw was free of movement and scratched the side of Reiei's neck.
In a reflex due to pain, he tried to kick Valkenhayn away, but the real thing looked more like he kicked himself away from Valkenhayn. And in this situation, it meant "to the ground". When the young werewolf's back met the ground, he didn't stand up immediately like the last times... Since there's that much seithr around, let's use it... While on the ground, Reiei concentrated what he could for a minor healing Ars he learned at the Academy. He needed to stop the bleeding first, only after that he'd bother standing up. If his master was to attack him while he was on the ground, Reiei would prove what a cornered werewolf is about.

"Would you like my next attack to kill you?"
The wolf growled while standing in safe distance to Reiei who was recovering from that last clash. The beast was ready to jump in at any time. This was still training, right? The master let his student tend his wounds and get back some of his stamina. Yet, why the threatening words?
"It will be dying, right here, right now, Reiei-kun. As a dog of the NOL it will only be a befitting end! Torn to pieces in that uniform..."
"Die, right here, right now. Or die later for the madam's sake, what will it be?"

Suddenly there was tension in the air. The thick Seithr-miasma as well as some rottening odors mixed into this terrifying mood.

That... can't be...? Is Sir Valkenhayn affected by the seithr there so much he loses his self-control? No, that's impossible... Trying to brush off his thoughts, he threw his black vest away, if only to show his refusal of keeping the NOL's idea in his mind.
"There is a limit to foolishness. I refuse to die now..." That training was way harder than what he had anticipated, but Reiei also grew stronger, and did so much faster than anytime before. "... but I can't let myself be called a NOL dog and do nothing."
Not losing his head was the primary thing in battle. But he also had to grow a bit of temper, that maybe was a teaching he'd given himself right now. That said, his energy was growing up. More than before. It still wasn't that of a wolf, but that wasn't one of an average human. Reiei just decided that it was more sure not to hold back in this situation.
Suddenly, he took a dash at Valkenhayn's direction, trying to chain two very wide-arcing punches that surely would be better if those were claw attacks. Those were aimed to Valkenhayn's head, and the second was aimed slightly upwards so it could send Valkenhayn spiralling if he didn't hold his ground... which he surely would.

When Reiei decided to charge at Valkenhayn, the man in his wolf form did so as well. They were running towards each other, the next blow might've been decisive for the outcome of this serious training, although at that point it was unclear if it had to be considered an exercise of such sort. Valkenhayn again jumped with his claws and fangs first at Reiei, who tried his best to show his determination.
The punches connected, the first better than the later as the wolf was in midair already taking some of it's impact. The studend had successfully managed a blow on his master! Valkenhayn, still in his wolf form, gave Reiei a bloodthirsty glare. Was it not over yet!?

"Well done... Reiei-kun. I expected you to become unsure, yet you stood unfaltered. With your determination I have faith in you, and so does Lady Rachel."
The butler stood in front of Reiei with his full body height gained back. He landed quite elegantly
"You grew a bit stronger just now..."
The old man let his neck crack. That last punch was quite something.
"...and you will get even stronger in the future."

Re: A master and his student

When Reiei had started his assault, he didn't understand that his attacks actually hit the fierce wolf head-on. Though, that wasn't without disadvantage since Valkenhayn was attacking too at that point. The young werewolf felt the blood of a nasty scratch running down his temple. Prepared to defend his right to fight for Rachel again, he saw the wolf-like Valkenhayn... regain human form? Was it all over? Did the master just break that training while Reiei's will had just been forged? A bit disappointed (mostly because that sudden urge to defend his name was also a slightly ecstatic thrill), Reiei stood listening to Valkenhayn's words of congratulation (were they?).
"It was that or dying, Sir.", the younger werewolf bowed to his elder while checking that scratch. "I am maybe not yet worth serving you and Madam Rachel, but..." His phrase was interrupted by his near fainting. Everything he ignored under the effects of his courage and survival instincts, that seithr hindrance jamming his senses, was back, and now the youngster's vision was nothing more than a blur, as was his thinking. "... that's what I will do.", he finished his phrase, trying to preserve an appearance of dignity despite everything.

"I apologize for the harsh words, young Reiei. I can see in your face that you feel insulted and disappointed as you still see the need for getting me back on those words. But anger is something humans tend to lose control over. Especially us, who are one of the most horrifying beasts, which ever set foot on this troubled planet. You as well noticed the intoxicating influence of the Seithr... this is my real reason I stopped you so suddenly. This area is soaked with this two-sided substance. We shall make haste to leave or even our health might suffer."
Valkenhayn took some determined steps towards the darkness. He knew the way out of here. A hidden path that will lead to the surface.
"You think too harsh of yourself, Reiei. Stating and accepting self-critism is a rare gift, young one. To control it even fewer among those gifted. Expecting too much from oneself is just as dangerous as expectiong nothing at all from oneself."
With those words the old man departed. Reiei would run in no danger of following him to the top. Only there they were to be careful as not to be seen together...
